Jofra Archer ruled out of Ashes, Jonny Bairstow returns for Ireland Test

England fast bowler Jofra Archer will miss the upcoming Ashes series against Australia due to the elbow injury which has kept him out of the Indian Premier League. Jonny Bairstow has returned to the squad for the one-off Test against Ireland, while wicketkeeper Ben Foakes has been dropped to allow for Bairstow’s inclusion. Meanwhile, Chris Woakes returns to the Test squad for the first time since March 2022, and Mark Wood is also back after skipping the tour of New Zealand.

Despite concerns, injuries to skipper Ben Stokes and seamer James Anderson are said to be minor.
The one-off match between England and Ireland will take place at Lord’s on June 1, after which the Ashes begin at Edgbaston on June 16.

England squad: Ben Stokes (captain), James Anderson, Jonathan Bairstow, Stuart Broad, Harry Brook, Zak Crawley, Ben Duckett, Dan Lawrence, Jack Leach, Ollie Pope, Matthew Potts, Ollie Robinson, Joe Root, Chris Woakes, Mark Wood
