Real Madrid has filed a complaint with Spanish prosecutors over racist chants directed at Brazilian footballer Vinicius Jr during a match on Sunday at Valencia’s Mestalla stadium, according to a statement released by the club on Monday.

The statement read, “Real Madrid C.F. shows its strongest rejection and condemns the events that occurred yesterday against our player Vinicius Jr.”

The club considers this to be a “hate crime” and as such, has filed a complaint with the State Attorney General’s Office, it added.

The Movement Against Intolerance (MCI) and the Association of Spanish Soccer Players (AFE) have also filed a complaint with the same prosecutor’s office, stating that racial slurs were directed towards the black player.
