Shaili Singh Wins Bronze in Yokohama

Long jumper Shaili Singh after winning the bronze medal at the Seiko Golden Grand Prix in Yokohama on Sunday.

Shaili Singh has won the bronze medal in the Seiko Golden Grand Prix, a World Athletics Continental Tour event held in Yokohama, Japan. The competition marked the athlete’s debut on the international outdoor stage.

The Indian long jumper, who was the 2021 under-20 Worlds silver medalist, achieved a wind-assisted 6.65m (+2.1) in her opening attempt, which turned out to be her best performance of the day. Shaili led the competition until halfway through, when Germany’s Maryse Luzolo claimed gold with a wind-aided 6.79m (+2.5).

Brooke Buschkuehl of Australia won the silver medal.

Shaili makes her bronze-winning leap.

Shaili’s other attempts included a 6.59m under legal wind conditions, and her performance in the category ‘A’ event should help her climb the rankings towards the ‘Road to Budapest.’ Only 36 long jumpers will advance to the World Championships in Hungary this August. Shaili is currently ranked 42.

“I was expecting something like 6.80m…her landing was not proper, there was a bit of rotation,” said Shaili’s coach, Robert Bobby George.

The Indian athlete’s next competitions include the inter-State Nationals in Bhubaneswar in July and the Asian Championships in Thailand later the same month.

Results:

Women’s long jump: 1. Maryse Luzolo (Ger) 6.79m; 2. Brooke Buschkuehl (Aus) 6.77; 3. Shaili Singh (Ind) 6.65m.
