FIFA Expresses Sympathy for Victims of El Salvador Stadium Stampede

On May 20, twelve people were killed in a stampede at Cuscatlan Stadium in San Salvador while they were gathered to watch a local soccer tournament. A crush of fans reportedly tried to enter the stadium to watch a match between teams Alianza and FAS. The match was suspended as emergency personnel evacuated people from the stadium, and the country’s hospital network provided medical care to patients. According to National Civil Police (PNC) director Mauricio Arriaza, twelve people died, and at least two were critically injured. Health Minister Francisco Alabi and Interior Minister Juan Carlos Bidegain were also present on the scene.

Carlos Fuentes, spokesman for the emergency services group Comandos de Salvamento, reported that more than 500 people were treated by rescue workers and that about 100 people in serious condition were taken to hospital, showing signs of asphyxia and other types of trauma. The stampede is believed to have started after a stadium gate fell, causing people to crowd together.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino Expresses Condolences for Tragic Stampede in El Salvador

In response to the tragedy, FIFA president Gianni Infantino offered his condolences and support to those affected by the stampede. He expressed deep sympathy for the families and friends of the victims who lost their lives and sent thoughts and prayers to the people of El Salvador, the Confederation of North, Central America, and Caribbean Association Football (CONCACAF), the Salvadoran Football Association, and the Primera Division de Futbol de El Salvador. Infantino noted that FIFA and the global football community stand in solidarity with those affected at this difficult time.
