Who Was the Best Super Middleweight: Alvarez, Calzaghe, or Ward?

Mexico’s Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, who holds the IBF, WBA, WBC, and WBO Super Middleweight titles, is one of the best. He won titles at Super Welterweight, Middleweight, Super Middleweight, and Light Heavyweight, with 17 defenses. He fought to a draw in his fifth fight and lost his first fight to Floyd “Money” Mayweather. He won the Super Middleweight title in 2018, stopping Rocky Fielding 27-1, and defended his middleweight title, defeating Danny “Miracle Man” Jacobs. He won the Light Heavyweight title by stopping Sergey “Krusher” Kovalev, but lost to WBA Light Heavyweight champion Dmitrii Bivol in September of 2022.

Welsh boxer Joe “Pride of Wales” Calzaghe, with 46-0, is another great. He won titles in 1997, 2006, and 2007, with 21 defenses. He defeated former Middleweight and Super Middleweight champion Bernard “The Executioner” Hopkins and Roy Jones Jr, with hand injuries causing his retirement.

Andre “S.O.G.” Ward, a 2004 Light Heavyweight Olympic Gold Medalist, with 32-0, won the Super Middleweight title in 2009 by stopping Mikkel Kessler and defeated Carl Froch in 2011. He made six defenses and won the Light Heavyweight title in 2016, defeating Sergey “Krusher” Kovalev.

Alvarez is a top-earning opponent with challengers such as David Benavidez, David Morrell, Jermall Charlo, Demetrius Andrade, and Zhanibek Alimkhanuly. He is asking for a rematch with Bivol.

Other outstanding Super Middleweight boxers are Roy Jones Jr, James Toney, Carl Froch, and Sven Ottke.

It is hard to pick the best Super Middleweight boxer between these greats. Each one proved to be a worthy champion during their time as a professional boxer.
