Some of the best supercross riders from around the country will participate.
The FMSCI-MRF MOGRIP National Supercross Championship is all set to take place on Sunday at a temporary venue near the CODISSIA grounds in Coimbatore. The event, which will serve as the season opener, is expected to draw over 120 entries, featuring some of the best supercross riders from around the country. “The riders all love to race in this part of the region. Lots of people are aware of this championship, and they know it is safe. So, I expect maximum participation in Coimbatore,” says Shyam Kothari of God Speed Racing, the person organizing the show.
One of the big changes to this year’s event is the participation of Hero Motosports in supercross. “This will really build up the championship, and the spectators are bound to witness good racing right till the end,” adds Shyam. But while the professionals are expected to put on a fantastic show, all eyes will also be on the juniors, aged 8-12 years, who will compete in their own class. The initiative, which started only a couple of years ago, is slowly catching on, and organizers are hopeful that it will become even more popular in the future.
In addition to the juniors, the other “older” class of riders, aged 12-16 years, is also expected to have a significant turnout.
The riders, however, will face a new challenge this year, as the city is experiencing record-breaking temperatures. Organizers say that riders are aware and have been hydrating themselves in advance, but the event will start early to help combat the heat.
Organizers have also modified the track slightly, making it faster and safer than in previous years. “Since it’s the first round, we have designed a very fast track, but it’s going to be safe. We have reduced the double jumps slightly and changed a few others to help riders get used to the track and avoid injuries,” says Shyam.
The track, combined with the sheer excitement of the season opener, is sure to put everyone in a good mood and set the stage for what promises to be an exciting event.
