The Orange Cap and Purple Cap of the IPL 2023: Mohammad Shami still on top, Shubman Gill closes in on the number one spot

The Gujarat Titans (GT) did not make it to the IPL 2023 final in their first attempt, losing the first qualifier against MS Dhoni’s Chennai Super Kings (CSK) on Tuesday night. But they will have another chance in the second qualifier on Friday. The defending champions have some good news as their players are on track to win both the Orange Cap and the Purple Cap for the season.

Gujarat Titans’ paceman Mohammad Shami secured his grip on the IPL 2023 Purple Cap after he took 2/28 against CSK on Monday. Shami now has 26 wickets in 15 matches while his teammate and Afghanistan leg-spinner Rashid Khan has 25 wickets from 15 matches.

CSK pacer Tushar Deshpande has moved up to the fourth spot with 21 wickets from 15 matches, tying with Rajasthan Royals (RR) leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal, in third place. CSK all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja has also climbed to the seventh position after claiming 2/18 against GT. He now has 19 wickets from 15 matches.

Shubman Gill close to toppling Faf du Plessis

GT’s top-performing batsman Shubman Gill failed to score his third successive century in the IPL, getting dismissed for 42 off 38 balls in the first qualifier. Gill missed his fifth fifty in IPL 2023 by 8 runs, and also fell nine runs short of overtaking Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) skipper Faf du Plessis at the top of the Orange Cap table.

Gill has accumulated 722 runs in 15 matches, with two hundreds and four fifties to his name at an average of 55.54. Du Plessis still holds the Orange Cap with 730 runs from 14 matches, with eight fifties. But the GT opener has at least one more match to try and claim the Orange Cap as he will play the winner of the Eliminator between Lucknow Super Giants and Mumbai Indians on Wednesday in the second qualifier.

CSK openers Devon Conway and Ruturaj Gaikwad are in the fifth and sixth position on the Orange Cap table. Conway, who made 40 against GT, has 625 runs in 15 matches – the same as RR opener Yashasvi Jaiswal – with six fifties so far. Gaikwad has scored 564 runs in 15 matches.

Both Conway and Gaikwad can add to their tally in the IPL 2023 Final on Sunday.
